Ivor Cutler had a close friendship with Phyllis King over a period of 40 years up to his death in 2006. They were regarded as partners for much of the time they knew each other, although they did not set up house together - preferring instead to keep their own flats in London even when spending much time together. There were extended periods when they were living together either at Ivor's flat or at Phyllis's home in Chalk Farm, near Primrose Hill in the London Borough of Camden.
The relationship was creative as well as personal, and sometimes Phyllis would join Ivor on stage at public performances of their work. Besides her job as a special needs teacher, Phyllis has written poetry, and has had two children's books published. Phyllis is an accomplished artist and Ivor Cutler fans are probably familiar with her work as designer of many of Ivor's album covers. Following years of study Phyllis has become proficient in Chinese brush painting and her work has been exhibited.
Phyllis King has one daughter, four grandchildren, and currently lives in Wiltshire, England.
